Working with Children and Young People (Under 18)
When working with children and young people, I take a collaborative and systemic approach, recognising that their wellbeing is often connected to the important relationships and environments around them. This may include parents, carers, siblings, schools, or other significant people involved in their lives.
I believe children and young people benefit most when they feel supported both within and outside of therapy. Depending on the young person’s needs, therapy may involve parents or carers in different ways, such as check-ins, joint sessions, sharing reflections, or supporting understanding at home. The level of involvement is always discussed and agreed together at the beginning of our work and reviewed throughout therapy where needed.
My priority is creating a space where the child or young person feels heard and respected, while also helping parents and carers feel informed and supported in their role. I aim to balance the young person’s need for privacy and autonomy with the importance of involving the people who help care for them.
Every young person is different, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. Together, we will consider what feels most helpful, developmentally appropriate, and supportive for the work we are doing.
